My Role

As part of RS21’s pivot towards becoming a company that is able to rapidly develop, deploy, and scale AI products, RS21 was working on building its own AI engine using open source tools and best practices. My role in the development of MOTHR as RS21’s AI engine included:

  • Defining the AI engine vision, strategy, positioning, and roadmap
  • Identifying Business and Technology objectives for the AI engine
  • Designing the architecture of the platform and its components
  • Designing the product development process that teams would use when developing products using the MOTHR AI engine
  • Developing the business model, use cases, and collateral that could be used to commercialize the platform as well as attract external investment

Situation

RS2 was a Data science company that provided technology services that included data engineering, data science, design and development. RS21 had delivered over a 100 projects for clients in Federal government, State and local government, Healthcare, Parks and Rec, Aerospace and other industries.

Task

To scale the organization, and expand its portfolio, RS21 needed to develop and implement a set of tools and best practices that would allow it to:

  • Significantly reduce time and effort needed to build new products
  • Leverage existing data and infrastructure to develop new use cases
  • Build intellectual property by creating and maintaining robust model and design libraries
  • Adopt best practices in building, maintaining and scaling AI products

Action

1. Identifying Business Objectives
  • Support the AI engine narrative by backing it up with concrete use cases
  • Develop a compelling list of differentiators of the AI engine value proposition vis-à-vis competitors (Other AI engines, Vertical AI product companies in our space, Horizontal AI platforms)
  • Build a robust roadmap, architecture and process that identifies and highlights the AI engine’s salient features (scalability, robustness, efficiency etc.) of the AI engine way of doing things
  • Build a AI engine business plan that can be used in the RS21 investor pitch deck
  • Pivot the company’s operating model from Services to Products+Services
  • Use the AI engine to attract new business and customers as a proof of concept and deliver value
  • Develop convincing marketing collateral, strategy and content framework around the AI engine

MOTHR @ RS21

Building and deploying AI/ML models takes 6-7 different highly paid experts working on a project for 6-9 months, and even after a large upfront capital investment, only 15-20% of AI solutions become viable products.  MOTHR is an AI Engine that allows RS21 to rapidly design, develop, deploy, manage, and scale robust AI/ML based products and solutions across a variety of environments in a repeatable way.
